Premier Western autograph pass. Pass issued for 1876 to W.H. Porter & wife. Porter served as auditor for the railroad. Signed by Leland Stanford. Countersigned on reverse by D.L. Gosh (?) and endorsed by Porter. Printed on salmon colored cardstock with blue font. Some ink stains and minor wear. Leland Stanford (1824-1893) was a central figure in California's 19th century history. Coming to California during the Gold Rush, he started successful mercantile businesses. In 1861, he was elected 8th governor of California. He also served as a U.S. Senator from 1885 to his death in 1893. Besides serving as president of Central Pacific, he was also involved with the Southern Pacific Railroad, the Pacific Union Express Company, and Wells Fargo & Company. He also, of course, founded Stanford University in California. (Prag Collection)
