Cerussite is a favorite species of mineral collectors. It is a lead carbonate mineral and is an important ore of lead. Cerussite crystallizes in the orthorhombic system and frequently forms spectacular, intricate twinned crystals. Three crystals are often twinned together on two faces of the prism, producing six-rayed stellate groups with the individual crystals intercrossing at angles of nearly 60°. The mineral is typically colorless or white, sometimes grey or greenish in tint and varies from transparent to translucent with a glassy luster. This specimen was discovered in the historically important, huge underground Tsumeb Copper Mine in Namibia. The ore was polymetallic and from it copper, lead, silver, gold, arsenic and germanium were produced. Many millions of tonnes of ore of spectacular grade were removed. The Tsumeb mine is also renowned amongst mineral collectors. It is noted for 243 valid minerals and is the type location for 56 mineral species. This specimen is in excellent condition and can be considered as a superior collector-quality specimen. Dimensions (cm): 4.8 H x 6 W x 3 D. Location: Tsumeb Mine, Tsumeb, Otjikoto Region, Namibia Date: Location: Namibia HWAC# 53036
