Gorgeous pot from Mata Ortiz made by Cesar Bugarini. Finely detailed design with large lizards. Traditional black pot with design in rust color, with touches in green. This large pot is in excellent condition, and measures 12.5" high x 11" diameter.

Mata Ortiz (Casas Grande) pottery incorporates elements of contemporary and prehistoric design and decoration, by the mid 1970's the tradition had taken hold. Each potter or pottery family produces their own distinctive, individualized ware. Credited for the growth and popularity of Casas Grande pottery, Juan Quezada, a poor farmer was inspired by fragments of ancient Paquimé pottery and even older fragments of Mimbres forms littering the ground. He was successful in learning to recreate the ancient process using slightly more modern techniques, although no one in the present tradition uses a potter's wheel.
