This large folding knife was made by Challenge Knife Co. of Bridgeport, Conn. (1891-1928). It has the moniker "coke bottle" shape. However, the design of the knife pre-dates Coca-Cola and was originally called the "swell center hunter". Likely invented in the 1870s and was a favorite carry by George Armstrong Custer. Our knife measures 5.375 in. closed and 9.5 in. open. The ricasso has "Challenge/Cutlery Corp./Bridgeport" in three straight lines without any further markings. The blade is a clip point, used, but in very good condition that moves on a crisp half step when closed. The scales are cocobolo held with three pins and a shield on the left side. The cocobolo is in very good condition on a friction folding design with a lanyard hole at the back. Challenge Cutlery would eventually become Schrade Knives. Please see photos for details.
