"Characteristics and Prospects of California." Rev. Horace Bushnell, D.D. 1858. Paperback booklet. Originally published in the "New Englander." 32 pp. 5.5" x 8.75". Sun faded cover, otherwise very good. Bushnell was an American Congregational minister and theologian. He wrote various books on religion and had a marked influence upon theology in America. He was a graduate of Yale Divinity School. In 1849, Californians sought statehood and, on September 9, 1850, California became the 31st state. In his writing, Bushnell marveled at the speed at which some of the state's cities had been built. "Three of these cities, San Francisco, Sacramento, and Marysville, have so much of city life and character that we hardly recognize their newness.
