1840 report to House of Representatives regarding expenditures at Branch Mint at Charlotte-4pp have slight lower paper loss. Rare CdV by Matthew Brady of Calvin Cowles, assayer of Charlotte Mint and prominent Republican in Wilkes county. From the report: "Before the branch mint commenced operations in 1837, we find the superintendent building an ice-house, a summer house, a bath-house, ....The committee, not perceiving the connection these buildings have with coining gold, are forced to the conclusion that the branch mint, in its operations, has added more to the comfort of the superintendent than to the promotion of the public good."
