The Hale & Norcross Mine was an important claim located between the Savage and Chollar. Its discovery dates back to the beginning of the Comstock in 1859. In the late 1860s, William Sharon took control of the mine but wasn't receiving enough ore to see profits. That's when the Bonanza firm (Mackay, Fair, Flood, and O'Brien) starting buying up shares to gain control. By 1869, they held enough shares to elect themselves on the board. Fair became superintendent. The mine paid dividends from 1869-1872, when it teamed with the Chollar-Potosi and Savage companies to sink the Combination Shaft.
