Chemical Laboratory & General Mining Offices Letter sheet Ò J. S. Phillips Ò Located at 702 California St. San Francisco. Earlier in 1873 Phillips had offices at 338 Montgomery St & at 423 Washington St. in San Francisco. See add below Salt Lakes City Directory 1873). This assay report is for the Emma Mine, Pinal County AZ. It is a four-page letter sheet for J. (Josiah) S. (Samuel) Phillips, Assayer, San Francisco, dated September 23rd, 1879. The letter & report refer to samples taken from the 55-foot level, which yielded $292 per ton of silver & 20.2% lead. Phillips was an important assayer & consulting mining engineer in the 1870s & 1880s. His breakout work was a book entitled, The Explorers, MinerÌs & MetallurgistÌs Companion, which he first published in 1872. At the time, this work was considered the most up to date, technical work on assaying. A second edition quickly followed in 1873 (682 pages). A full-page advertisement for a later edition of this book is part of this four-page letter sheet. Ephemera from Phillips is exceptionally rare, & this piece is an R8 & may be Unique. Very Fine.
