Chemical Laboratory & General Mining Offices Letter sheet - J. S. Phillips - Located at 702 California St. San Francisco. Earlier in 1873 Phillips had offices at 338 Montgomery St and at 423 Washington St. in San Francisco. See add below Salt Lakes City Directory 1873). This assay report is for the Emma Mine, Pinal County AZ. It is a four-page letter sheet for J. (Josiah) S. (Samuel) Phillips, Assayer, San Francisco, dated September 23rd, 1879. The letter and report refer to samples taken from the 55-foot level, which yielded $292 per ton of silver and 20.2% lead. Phillips was an important assayer and consulting mining engineer in the 1870s and 1880s. His breakout work was a book entitled, The Explorers, Miner's and Metallurgist's Companion, which he first published in 1872. At the time, this work was considered the most up to date, technical work on assaying. A second edition quickly followed in 1873 (682 pages). A full-page advertisement for a later edition of this book is part of this four-page letter sheet. Ephemera from Phillips is exceptionally rare, and this piece is an R8 and may be Unique. Very Fine.
