Large hole cancels. 7.5 x 9.5" Allegorical vignette. Printed by Rawdon, Wright, Hatch & Co. New York. The Chenango Canal was first proposed in 1824 when the Erie Canal was being built. It was authorized by the legislature in 1833 and completed in October 1836 at a total cost of $2,500,000. It was 97 miles long and for much of its course followed the Chenango River. It operated 1834-1878.
