This is number 366 for 100 shares issued to TL Clingman in 1861. Signed by secretary Machman and president JM McKinney (signature faded). A California style hydraulic mining scene is the vignette. Unusual design on the left side of the stock certificate. Cut unevenly at left from the stock book. No edge issues, rips, ears, dog ears or pin holes.

The Chestatee Hydraulic Company was at the forefront looking at the new hydraulic mining techniques being used in California and determining the practicability of working the placer deposits in Georgia by these hydraulic method with water from the Chestatee River. As such they commissioned Blake to report to them as early as 1858. The Mining Magazine and Journal of Geology edited by Blake reports in 1860 that the Chestatee Hydraulic Company the canal of the Chestatee Hydraulic Company about twelve miles in length is designed to convey the water of the Chestatee River to the placers in the vicinity of the Loud deposit. It is not quite complete though experimental washing with one pipe was commenced in May at the upper margin of the gold belt.

This stock certificate is for Thomas L. Clingman. Although not a scientist by profession, Clingman had a strong interest in both the applied and pure aspects of science. He was involved with locating or promoting the mining of mica, corundum, zircon, platinum, and other various gemstones in North Carolina. His work in topography was even more impressive as judged by Clingman's Peak in the Black Mountains and Clingman's Dome in the Great Smoky Mountains. Clingman also sat in the North Carolina legislature. During the Civil War he rose to the rank of General and his unit was at the battles of Cold Harbor, Drewry's Bluff and Petersburg. In the battle of Weldon Railroad he was badly wounded and unable to continue in command of his unit.
