This stock certificate is for Thomas L. Clingman. Although not a scientist by profession, Clingman had a strong interest in both the applied and pure aspects of science. He was involved with locating or promoting the mining of mica, corundum, zircon, platinum, and other various gemstones in North Carolina. His work in topography was even more impressive as judged by Clingman's Peak in the Black Mountains and Clingman's Dome in the Great Smoky Mountains. Clingman also sat in the North Carolina legislature. During the Civil War he rose to the rank of General and his unit was at the battles of Cold Harbor, Drewry's Bluff and Petersburg. In the battle of Weldon Railroad he was badly wounded and unable to continue in command of his unit. (Al Adams Gold Rush Memorabilia Collection) Date: 1861 Location: Dahlonega, Georgia HWAC# 57059
