Thurlow moved to Manitou in 1878 and opened a portrait and landscape studio. He died that year [ref: Mautz]. Looking west, signs for a bakery, little casino saloon, and meat market are clearly visible. The town is definitely booming as evidenced by the number of people out and about. Measures 7" x 4." Medium contrast and focus is outstandingly sharp. In good condition with little wear. Edges of matte are slightly worn and the bottom right corner is bent. Hand written description in ink on back "Presented to the Soldier Home by William Lakey, New York.” In 1874, silver was found around here, leading to a great silver rush.
