The stock is great. The location is great. But the real story here is John Bidwell. In 1840, 69 brave and intrepid men, women and children would join the Bartleson-Bidwell Party. They would be the first wagon train to reach California (although they left their wagons in the Sierra Nevada Mountains). Bidwell would eventually settle in Chico, but he never forgot Nevada. This stock certificate of the Chico Gold & Silver Mining Company was located in the Hardin District. This was about 45 miles north of Gerlach and the Black Rock Desert. Includes excerpts from Bidwell's memories of the trip and biography (ran for California Governor). Stock Certificate #39 for 20 shares on October 18, 1867. Hardin Mining District. Only two thousand shares were sold at $100 a share and worth one foot of the Emerald Lead. ALSO a receipt for payment on assessment Number 2 or stock holder 108.
