Issued to mine president J. Bidwell, 20 shares at $100 per in Chico Gold and Silver Mining Company. Signed by Bidwell as well as secretary James Martin. Dated October 18, 1867, with a vignette of a smelting plant. Please see photos for more detail and condition. John Bidwell was a California pioneer who settled at Bidwell, now Chico. Bidwell worked for John Sutter, fought with him in the Mexican War in 1844 and later with Fremont. He was with Sutter right after Marshalls discovery and found gold on the Feather River. Bidwell was in politics, friends of the Indians, and was a source of political and economic stability for the region. The Hardin District had a fair bit of prospecting in the 1860's but it did not continue much longer. Bidwell must have had great hope in Hardin but any ore that may have been present was played out early. Hardin District is located at Black Rock which is known by that name.
