Emerald Lead, One Foot to the Share. Hardin District, Humboldt County, Nevada printed at top of stock. No. 69, issued for 10 shares to Lafayette Fargo on Oct. 18th, 1867. Signed by J. Bidwell, president and Jas. C. Martin, secretary. Vignette of building, ore being dumped at left from ore car, wagon and horses out front. Black border. Uncancelled. Stub still attached. Very fine condition. The Bidwell-Bartelson party was the first wagon train party to cross from American to California blazing the trail for hundreds of thousands to follow. Bidwell was a California pioneer who settled at Bidwell, now Chico. Bidwell worked for John Sutter, fought with him in the Mexican War in 1844 and later with Fremont. He was with Sutter right after Marshalls discovery and found gold on the Feather River. Bidwell was in politics, friends of the Indians, and was a source of political and economic stability for the region. The Hardin District had a fair bit of prospecting in the 1860's but it did not continue much longer. Bidwell must have had great hope in Hardin but any ore that may have been present was played out early. The Hardin District is located at Black Rock which is known by that name.
