Payroll receipt to Ah Jack as Labor Contractor of the Chinese working on the V&T Railroad out of Reno Camp. For $254 for 254 days - A dollar a day. Beautiful signature of foreman J. L. Hayward and sloppy signature for Ah Jack. Ah Jack was one of a select few whom Yerington trusted to provide Chinese labor. The 1880 census shows that Ah Jack was living between Reno and Verdi. He is 42 years old and is listed as a labor contractor. As a lumber and railroad contractor, Ah Jack would be expected to provide living quarters, food, tools, medicine and medical attention for his Chinese gang as needed. Although he worked in the Truckee Meadows he was noted for sending his crews as far away as Carson City - mainly working for Yerington. The Carson Tahoe Lumber & Fluming Company records at the University of Nevada show purchases from Ah Jack as early as 1872. He was more than a labor contractor as he was regarded as the official interpreter for the Virginia & Truckee Railroad. The V&T was completed in 1868. This is ten years after that date. I can find no articles in the local newspapers about any major work being done on the V&T in the Reno area in 1878. I assume this is regular maintenance and nothing too major.
