Banded polychrome agate jewelry box, possibly gilded, one of a kind. Considered French Palais. The agate here is exceptional and stunning. Romans, then Italians, then French, and Russian experimented through history with making exceptional ornamental pieces from natural rock. The height of "production" seems to be circa 1700-1850. This piece is constructed of some of the highest quality and eye appeal natural agate. Interestingly, the front & back panels use a split form. The polished slabs of the 4 sides are beveled, with the bevel edge turned in, while the bottom has the bevel edge turned downward. The top piece is placed with the bevel facing upward. The feet are made of carefully & skillfully cut agates with the banding horizontal to the table top. Impossible to date, but probably mid 1800's. This piece came from the Rudolph Hercog estate, a major Greek/Roman Archaeologist c1900-10. Piece measures approx. 2x2.75x2", when including the feet. Great condition. See photo.
