Cloth map, likely c.1860. Township No. 9 South, Mount Diablo Meridian. Part of Rancho Shoquel Augmentation. Surveyed by John Wallace. Only one ranch shown (Rancho Shoquel). Canyon is spelled in old Spanish. Contains very early landmarks like "laurel tree" and "redwood tree." This is the San Lorenzo River area, Santa Cruz County, between Ben Lomond and Scotts Valley. 18 x 16.5" Stains. Shoquel is an older spelling of Soquel. Rancho Soquel was a 1668 acres Mexican land grant in present-day Santa Cruz County, California given in 1833 by Governor José Figueroa to Maria Martina Castro y Amador. In 1844, Martina Castro was granted by Governor José Figueroa a further 32702 acres grant known as the Soquel Augmentation. The Rancho Soquel grant along Monterey Bay includes present-day Soquel and Capitola. Soquel Augmentation was comprised mainly of mountain watershed land. It appears that Wallace's survey was completed in 1858.
