Original three page hand written letter to Abagail Dunning in Harpswell, Maine from her son Benjamin P. Dunning, datelined Mokulumne River, Dec 21st, 1851. Dunning mentions much about the group he traveled with, who all came via the Isthmus of Panama. Many died along the way from "the Isthmus Fever", and he mentions the names. Several of his family members are still sick as he notes. A portion of the group has "gone to the Northern Mines", the Nevada City area, as specifically mentioned. Ben discusses the difficulties of work and life in the mines, telling his mother that building a railroad is nothing compared to what they are doing in California. He complained about the cost of coming across the Isthmus at over $300 extra. Ben is clearly excited about the gold that has been found by his friends and what he expects to find for himself. A very fine letter. State: California City: Mokolumne River Date: HWAC# 84836
