Large beautifully framed map 18 x 21.5". J. C. Walter, sculpt. Published by Chapman & Hall, October 1842. Published in Maps of the Society for the Diffusion of Knowledge. Vol 1. London, 1844. This society encouraged education. This early piece shows Texas and California at a time when few maps were published, and little data was known, except in the Texas and Mexico regions. Rare. The data on this map is from a time of extreme peril for Texas. Mexico had Texas under constant attack. Severely damaged by the Alamo six years earlier, Sam Houston was trying to establish a civilized governance over the region. Under attack, Houston called a state of emergency, and wars broke out all over for more than a year.
