Ore specimen from the famous Gottschalk Collection. Attached to cardboard label that reads: "13 Gold-Silver (Kustelite in vug) "Chollar" Comstock Lode Virginia-City-Nev." 1.75 x 2 x 1" Weighs 87.0g with label. Kustelite is named for Guido Kustel and is a variety of silver defined as containing 10% - 30% of Gold. Guido Kustel was one of the most important mining engineers of his time, spanning the California Gold Rush, early silver mining days of Arizona and the subsequent silver boom on the Comstock in Nevada. He was born in 1817 in Hungary in a region presently straddling the border between Poland and Ukraine. Kustel attended the prestigious Freiberg School of Mines, where intense training left graduates as assayers, metallurgists and mining engineers. The Chollar Mine is located between the Hale & Norcross and Potosi mines. Tours are still offered today.
