This is a City of Tombstone business license made out to the Peck Bros. for "Peddlers" issued on Aug. 1st, 1881 just two months before the shoot-out at the OK Corral. It becomes an issue when taxes are not paid and it is turned over to the city attorney. It is signed on the back " refer to city atty./ V. W. Earp" in pencil. Virgil Earp was the Town Marshal and a Deputy U.S. Marshal at the same time in Tombstone. A Marshal would have been the equivalent of a chief of police today. On October 28th Virgil summons up his younger brothers for help in bringing in the Clantons for cattle rustling. That's what brothers do. This sets the stage for some serious revenge fights. Virgil would take three slugs in the back from a shotgun which left him permanently maimed but lived until 1905. This document is also signed on the front by Mayor John Clum who befriends the Earps and himself becomes a target in an assassin's attempt on his life later in the year. Mr. Clum, acting as an Indian Agent, was responsible for bringing in Geronimo without incident in 1877. 4 in. X 7 in. document, framed and matted at 9.5 in. X 12.5 in. Please see photo for details.
