This letter is signed by Jacob Thompson a House Representative of Mississippi. He was returning money to a Richard Smith in 1847. It would not be the last time that he needed to return money. Considered a scoundrel of the Civil War by some historians. (It depends on who is writing that history). Apparently, Thompson embezzled a large sum of money from the Confederacy while acting as a secret agent in Canada hiding a half million Confederate dollars. After Lincoln's assassination he exiles to Paris and lived well. 9 in. X 8 in. folded in letter form of the period with a rough left edge. [] [Mississippi] [] [] []
