Jacob Thompson, Secretary of the Interior before the Civil War - was later a Confederate scoundrel of the first order. He was assigned to Canada as a Confederate Statesman, and funded heavily with Confederate money to disrupt Union activities in the North. He schemed a plot to release Confederate POWs in Chicago, poison the general population with yellow fever, and knew of the plot to either kidnap or assassinate President Lincoln. He was later exonerated in the Lincoln assassination but left the country with a large sum of money. This is his autograph underlined with his title of Secretary (1857-1861). A cut square of 1.5 in. X 3 in. on a backing at 3 in. X 5 in. [] [] [] [] []
