Colonel Ulrich Dahlgren was the second son of John Dahlgren, a Navy Admiral. This letter is to his aunt asking that she keep any newspaper accounts of him and President Lincoln dated April 14, 1863. The letterhead is from HQ, "Army of the Potomac." Ulrich was a seasoned soldier losing a leg in the battle at Gettysburg. He lost his life in a raid in Virginia with the aid of Jessie's Scouts to Assassinate Jefferson Davis, free the Union POWs at Libby Prison, and lastly to burn the city of Richmond. He took four bullets for his trouble and the dispatch papers were found in his artificial leg in March, 1864. Signed boldly. [] [] [] [] []
