This is a true Civil War Colt model 1849 pocket pistol. It is .31 caliber with a 4 in. barrel. It is marked "ADDRESS COL. COLT NEW-YORK U.S.A." on one line. The serial number is 21839X made in 1863 mid-year. It retains the original oil finished grips and many original screws. All serial numbered parts match including the wedge and loading lever. The wedge has been staked with a punch to expand surface contact but it is still there. Very little stage coach scene is left on the cylinder. This gun is in poor working condition and the cylinder shows wear from drag of the stop lug on its surface. The arbor and barrel show little signs of wear. External age is prevalent throughout this gun but the barrel bore is clean with 7 lands. The loading lever works and latches correctly. One piece walnut grips have been cared for and are worn and shrunk due to aging but are intact with very little blemishes. If you are a Civil War collector, consider this gun as they were carried by Officers of the Union army and by Confederates in desperation for close and personal protection. Of all the Colt percussion guns the model 1849 was the most produced model at over 300,000 copies made; however, very few survive today. Date: Location: HWAC# 56210
