Excellent postmark St. Joseph, May 30, Mo. Red underprint of lady holding a union sign. Says NONE BUT THE BRAVE DESERVE THE FAIR. The citizens of St. Joseph were so violently pro-Southern that in May of 1861,a mob pulled down the U. S. flag from the post office. A permanent garrison of U. S. Troop arrived in June to enforce control of the railroad terminus and the Missouri River at this point. Very few covers are known from St. Joseph during the war except for letters from soldiers of the occupying garrison. [information comes from typed note] Includes a June 20, 1861 clip about the incident at St. Joseph.
