A handmade cribbage board from the Civil War, roughly 12 in. long X 2 5/8 in. wide X 5/8 in. thick made of oak . It is marked: "Co. A 146 (Th)" "NYSV" (New York State Volunteers) followed by "Z. D"A", a Zouave Unit. The Zouave around the world were modeled after infantry units in the French Army. In the United States, the Zouave were brought to the forefront during the Civil War by Elmer E. Ellsworth, who commanded the 11th New York Infantry. The 146th regiment was known as Garrard's Tigers after June, 1863 with Company A filled by volunteers from New York City and Brooklyn. A Zouave soldier was brightly dressed with a pant that gathers at the knee, a short jacket, a fez hat wound with a turban, a sash that wrapped around the waist, and an ankle wrap that followed to the knees. After considerable time to get dressed, these soldiers found their uniforms very comfortable in combat, originally styled by the French. The board is hand drilled and shows inconstant placement of the holes (possibly from field construction), but very neat. A carved bugle at the top of the board symbolizes an Infantry unit. Some finish loss on the top and wear around the edges from use, in very good condition, a choice Civil War Zouave collectible. City: State: Date:
