This check is made out to Confederate Spy Thomas Conrad dated 1859. Conrad was a noted resident of Washington D.C. as a respected school administrator; perfect as a spy operative. Part of his success was mastering disguises and at one point in 1865 being arrested for looking like John Wilkes Booth and released by the very man who was trying to uncover him as a spy. The check is made out Conrad for tuition expenses from the Farmer's and Mechanic's Bank of Georgetown, North Carolina. 7.5 in. X 2.75 in. [Georgetown] [North Carolina] [] [] []
