Two Civil War era letter sheets with matching unused covers, c1861-62. First is a letter dated July 21, 1861, with red, white and blue color illustration of the American flag flying next to a cannon. The sheet is printed in blue "The Old Flag: We will protect it and avenge its insults!" The cover is printed in blue below the illustration, "I accept your timely invitation and will address you at Richmond on the Fourth of July. - Ben Butler." The other letter sheet and cover have printed matching Civil War maps, illustrated with maps of Mississippi and Tennessee, with an arrow pointed toward "Battlefield of April 6-7." The cover in purple ink and letter sheet in red ink, each with "Corinth, and the scene of the great Battle at Pittsburgh, Tenn." printed next to the map. Letters contain family information. [
