Lot of 2. Sickles served in Congress (1857-61) and shot his wife's lover within steps of the White House. He was appointed Brigadier General of Volunteers in Sept. 1861 and was in command of New York's famous Excelsior Brigade. He was then appointed Major general and led Union troops at Williamsburg, Fair Oaks, Antietam, and Gettysburg. At Gettysburg, he was notorious for moving troops forward in the peach orchard. His troops were overrun by Longstreet's troops and he was wounded and lost a leg. After the war, he served as Military Governor of South Carolina and as Minister to Spain during the US Grant administration. 1) 1884 check, Bank of Metropolis, signed by Sickles. 2) Engraved portrait by Frank Leslie's.
