Interesting Civil War medallion (37 mm) which opens like an "opium dollar" to hold a picture or message of a loved one. 1st Pennsylvania Cavalry Troop G No. 39 on obverse. Uncle Sam on battlefield with cannon pointing to the rising sun on reverse. Also "Mizpah", the Jewish term for bond between two people. The 1st Pennsylvania cavalry had a number of Jewish soldiers and was active July 1861 to June 1865. They participated in over 30 engagements including Bull Run and Gettysburg under Brigadier General G. D. Bayard who was killed in the battle of Fredericksburg.
