This is a hand written letter dated June 7, 1863 from Robert G. Norton to his grand-daughter, now framed. A typed letter accompanies the original for ease of reading. This may be the same Robert G. Norton who was Sheriff in Beaufort County, S.C. from 1829-1830. He speaks poorly of the "Federals" at Vicksburg, being besieged. It is clear that the Southern Cause is deeply rooted. The letter is accompanied by his Kentucky rifle (actually made in Tennessee or South Carolina). It has a 42.5 in. lightly swamped barrel at .36 cal. There is no nosecap, ramrod thimbles are hand made, the percussion lock is a replacement as is the trigger guard. The stock is of curly maple with some loss of wood for about four inches at the muzzle. It is an unsigned working gun sometimes called a "poor-boy" rifle ; overall length is 59 in. in fair condition. This gun was carried by Robert G. Norton in the Civil War. No FFL required. This gun is an antique and no attempt has been made to fire this gun to confirm its mechanical integrity. Nor should his gun be fired without the examination by a qualified gunsmith. Any attempt to fire an antique gun is at the risk of the owner and not consistent with the value of the firearm. No sales to New York, New Jersey, California, or Hawaii. Extra shipping charges apply.
