This lot holds over twenty letters from/to family, friends, and teachers during the Civil War. Generally, the letters are cordial and light-hearted sometimes describing camping in all kinds of weather. It is easy to note the intellectual ability of all persons involved; their great penmanship, prose, and spelling ability. The Civil War was only 30 years after Daniel Webster formalized the English language as we know it. The education of the people writing is impressive. The conservation of paper and postage is also noteworthy. Sometimes the letter is turned on edge to continue the read. Some letters are written on paper with patriot vignettes. Most letters are postmarked from Ohio, others are from Wisconsin, Michigan, Tennessee, Washington DC, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, and Massachusetts. [
