This cabinet card depicts a young volunteer for the New York 7th Infantry, 1861. His belt buckle is stamped "SR" for Steuben's Rangers. They were mustered into service in April , 1861 for two years service and fought in 29 skirmishes. The cap indicates that he belonged to the 48th Infantry, however, Steuben's Rangers were noted to be the worst outfitted regiment from the state of New York and may have borrowed the cap to complete his uniform for the photo. This cabinet card was likely mounted much later after the Civil War based on the size and color of the matting. (5 in. X 7 in.) A penciled-in name on the back is likely false information. C. 1880's. Good color contrast, round corners fashionable for the mounting period with two pinholes upper corners. Foxed upper left corner. Please see photo for details.
