This is a Union Officer's medallion from the Civil War with a bail on the back; 2.5 in. in diameter and eagle design made of brass. It may have originally been attached to the belt or frog on a sword scabbard. There is a fragile note attached to the back describing" "found at The Crater by J.A. Nichols May 4th, 1893 / evidently an officer's sword ... (illegible)" . The battle of Petersburg, Virginia (July 30, 1864) would go down in history as one of the worst defeats by the Union Army where Grant described it as "the saddest affair I have witnessed in this war". The battle took place between Cold Harbor to Petersburg, Va. where Union soldiers dug a mine shaft under Confederate lines with the intent of opening a line in their trench works. The resulting explosion opened "The Crater" in Confederate lines; quickly filled by Union soldiers and slaughtered in-mass. The medallion is in very good condition; there are rough edges in several places indicating traumatic use.
