General U. S. Grant's siege of Vicksburg began March 29 and ended with the Confederate surrender July 4, 1863, the day after the battle of Gettysburg. This group is from Union soldier Charles Andrews, who fought in the first battle of the campaign at Fort Gibson which began on May 1. He was wounded May 10, 1863 and died the next day. Andrews was a member of Company A, 29th Wisconsin Infantry Regiment, 13th Corps General McClendon commanding. He was born January 18, 1844. After he was shot, there was a delay in getting a doctor. He was finally moved across the river to the military hospital set up on the James Plantation in Louisiana. He had complained of stiffness in his joints and expired shortly afterwards. Andrews was the son of Justus Andrews, great grandfather of our friend Sam Dougan. In this lot is the family tin type photograph of Union Soldier Charles Andrews and his original brass Union belt buckle, and an Andrews family letter 12/27/64. The letter contents are choice: "we was going to Chattanooga but the Johnny rebs were so thick between here and there that we did not go... Today the news came that Sherman had taken Savannah. I should think the rebels would begin to take the hint and dry up this awful war... it looks hard to go into the hospitals here and see the wounded soldiers and see the care they have the surgeons just as ? a man would die as not. When will this war close and peace be restored?" The Andrews photo is in a hard case, one side missing. He poses in his Union uniform. Accompanying the lot is a pamphlet on the Siege of Vicksburg from the Vicksburg National Military Park. This lot also contains another Andrews family letter from 1873. Provenance: in the family since the Civil War.
