Correspondence archive of Civil War soldier William Hawkins Wickersham Sr. who served in Company C 124th Illinois Infantry. Wickersham, for many years a popular and well-known journeyman printer, is the main subject of the over 70 letters written between Wickersham and his wife Margaret (Maggie) Wickersham, while he was in the service. The letters date from October 12, 1862 to 1865 and contain many interesting elements of a soldier serving during that conflict.
There are also a dozen letters dated 1870-1885 from relatives. Wickersham was mustered out July 1865 and discharged in Chicago in August 1865.
Most all the letters are in readable condition, although there are some fragments. There's also a typed list of the letters and a synopsis of some. Very nice archive. Please see photos for more details. [Chicago] [Illinois] [] [] []
