This is the journal of Dr. Robert King Reid, son of a protestant minister, who studied at Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia and came to California during the Gold Rush, serving such Motherlode communities as West Point, Chinese Camp and Big Oak Flat. He was appointed superintendent of the General Hospital at Stockton and remained as superintendent when it became The Insane Asylum of California in 1854.It was during this period that he met Yosemite Valley pioneer/explorer James Hutchings. Bad investments left he and his wife destitute. After studying in Paris, he returned to Stockton and was commissioned as an officer at the outbreak of the Civil War. he served as surgeon for the 3rd California Infantry and the Second California Cavalry. He was mustered out in 1866 and retired from his medical profession and became an investor in the Bank of Stockton. He passed away in 1891. The journal is in his own hand and very readable.
