A Civil War era Union Soldier's letter to his sister after experiencing battles, with cover and enclosed piece of Confederate lieutenant's shirt. This is a letter written by A.H. McMurphy, Company G, 10th Regiment, Vermont Volunteers. Though not signed, it matches a letter from Lot #182518, both written to his sister, Miss Martha J. McMurphy, East Randolph, VT. In the letter, he describes rebels overtaking their camp, killing people, burning food stores. The writer and comrades killed a captain and lieutenant. "We killed two of the rebels a captain and a lieutenant the captain was not dressed in his uniform but the lieutenant was. I have a piece of the lieutenants shirt which I will inclose (sic) in this letter if I do not forget it." The battles were described in full detail. Postmarked June 17, 1863, Washington.
