Albert Henry Woolson Last Surviving Civil War Veteran 1950 Albert Henry Woolson was fourteen years old when he was assigned as a drummer to the 1st Minnesota Heavy Artillery Co. C., 1864-1865. His birthday has been disputed but an accepted date is February 11, 1850; he passed on August 2, 1956. He was the last surviving Civil War veteran. There is an autographed B&W photo of Albert in a double breasted coat wearing his GAR (Great Army of the Republic) ribbon. He was Senior Vice Commander-in-Chief of the GAR in 1950. A letter with a hand written reply accompanies the photo dated Nov. 6, '50 looking for his autograph; replied with a shaky pen. There is also a calling card at 2.5 in. X 3.75 in. with Woolson's signature. Then President Eisenhower recognized his passing with a format statement. Please see photos for details. [] [Minnesota] [] [] []
