A pair of books, one by Clarence King and the other a biography about King, who was a leader of the Fortieth Parallel Survey. The set includes: "Mountaineering in the Sierra Nevada," by Clarence King, Boston: James R. Osgood, 1872, First Edition. Considered the greatest book on mountaineering in America, one of the Zamorano 80, it describes ascents made by King when he participated in the Geological Survey of California from 1863-66. King was the first to climb the Sierra Nevada and the first to write of the range extensively. A 12,909-foot Sierra peak is named for him, Mount Clarence King. 292 pp, 5.5" x 8". Damage to cover, upper spine, corner bumps, detaching hinges front and back, 1" tear inside cover fly leaf, 1.5" hole cut blank area of title page, otherwise interior very good. The second book is "Clarence King, A Biography," Thurman Wilkins, University of New Mexico Press, Albuquerque, 1988, originally 1958. The author says of King in preface, "King measured, mapped, and surveyed an enormous region of the West. He was instrumental in convincing Congress to establish the U.S. Geological Survey and served as its first director." King became well-known, was sought after for social engagements, regularly invited to White House dinners, but was secretly married by common law to a black woman, of which only his closest friends knew. 524 pp., 6" x 9.5". Dust cover, fine. [ Sierra Nevada
