Four different stereoviews of Cliff House by Thomas Houseworth & Co., c.1865-1868. 1) Earliest view is Lawrence & Houseworth #406, Cliff and House and Seal Rocks, c.1865, with view from above. Foxing. 2) Lawrence & Houseworth #408, The Cliff House, view from below looking up, many guests on railings and wagons visible. Great shot. c.1866. 3) Thomas Houseworth & Co. #406, different view from above, can read the name of the restaurant. c.1868. 4) Thomas Houseworth & Co. #403, Cliff House from the road. Soiling. No date, but likely c.1867. The Cliff House was a restaurant dating back to 1858, when the first version of it was built with shipwreck salvaged lumber. It was rebuilt in 1863. Adolph Sutro purchased it in 1883, but it was destroyed a few years later when a ship carrying dynamite crashed and exploded on the cliffs below it. A fire in 1894 finished off that version. Sutro rebuilt it in 1896, and that structure lasted until a fire in 1907. Sutro's daughter rebuilt it. (Prag Collection) Date: Location: San Francisco, California HWAC # 54719
