This pair of cabinet cards is from Opp. Manning's Drug Store in Grass Valley, taken by photographer W.A. Clinch, brother of Charles E. Clinch, a man well-known in Grass Valley history due to his success as a proprietor, town Mayor and mining investor, along with many other accomplishments. The Clinch brother were both part of the Masonic fraternity, the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, the Knights of Pythias, the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, the Knights of Honor and Quartz Parlor, No. 58, Native Sons of the Golden West. Additionally, Clinch's business sold "the highest grade and best brands of bottled liquors for medical purposes" and the name is familiar to antique whiskey bottle collectors as at least one Clinch personalized, embossed Whiskey bottle is known to exist. Both Clinch brothers are buried in the Odd Fellows and Masonic Cemetery in Grass Valley. The Clinch name on these cabinet cards compliments a variety of collectible categories including Whiskey bottles, mining, political, photography, famous Californians and more.
