This is a clipped autograph of Major General George Gordon Meade of the Union Army Volunteers. Matted at 8 in. X 10 in. It is under-signed as Major General Volunteers which places it between 1862 and 1863. General Meade is best remembered for his decisive role at Gettysburg having received his new position only three days earlier and repulsing the Confederates during Pickett's charge. He was later criticized for not pursuing General Lee during the retreat. General Meade instead, tended to the many wounded in the field.
