Two large chunks of coal recovered from the S.S. Central America shipwreck. The larger is 5 x 4.5 x 2.5 inches, about 1.4 lbs. The other is 5 x 4 x 2.5 inches and about 1.2 lbs. The coal bed of the S.S. Central America was in the bottom of hull, where it served as ballast as well as fuel. During the havoc of the sinking, the coal would have been inundated with seawater, and being only slightly more dense than water, it was mobilized by the incessant sloshing of the storm waves. Thus, coal was found at almost every level of the shipwreck during the recovery effort. Sitting amongst the coal debris were several key artifacts, including the spectacular daguerreotype, now called the "Mona Lisa of the Deep."
