Anthracite coal. 3 labeled pieces of anthracite coal, recovered in 1987 from Site 87, not the SS Central America. This shipwreck, from a similar era, and with large piles of coal (as would be expected on the SSCA) was the subject of a key legal contest in the history of the project. Read about this in the article "Coal and the Quest for the Ship of Gold."

The largest of these pieces (3 lbs. 2 oz., 2,304g) measures 8 x 5 x 3 inches. The total weight of all pieces is 5 lbs. 1 oz, (2,304g)

The significant deposits of calcium carbonate (limestone) encrusting parts of these pieces are of geological interest, derived and precipitated from the surrounding sediment of the shipwreck site.

Labeled with alphanumerics prefixed by the letter H. During the expedition this was the at-sea designation for Site 87. The numbers indicate the dive and specimen numbers.

Provenance: SS Central America Collection
