This is a 132-page report, number 1999, prepared for the 56th Congress, First Session, of the US House of Representatives regarding labor troubles that occurred in the mining district around Coeur d'Alene, Idaho in the late 1890s beginning with a labor strike in 1982. The report includes background information on the situation and conditions that lead up the the "insurrection and riot" on April 29, 1899 which resulted in the death of two men, the wounding of a third, and $250,000 in property destruction. The governor of Idaho had appealed to the US President William McKinley for military intervention. Several hundred men were arrested without discretion as to whether they were involved in the miners' union or not! This report is a contemporary description of the events and outcomes of the conflict that includes sworn testimony from government and mining officials, civic leaders, and those incarcerated in the aftermath. It is an interesting perspective on a pivotal event in the mining and labor history of the United States. The book contents are intact and complete in excellent condition, although the covers are missing. State: Idaho City: Coeur d'Alene Date: 1900
