Lee County Gazetteer Containing a historical and descriptive sketch of the County, and sketches of the several townships, together with City directories of Keokuk and Fort Madison, and a complete business register and registers of City and County organizations, societies, public buildings, &c. Also, a list of post offices in Iowa, and a list of money order offices throughout the United States. J. F. Coffman & Co. Publisher, Chicago, ILL. Printed at The Gate City Book and Job Rooms, Keokuk, Iowa. 1868. 334 pages, plus 7 pages of yellow paper with ads ending with back endpaper pasted inside back cover and numbered page 343. Front endpaper pasted inside cover is numbered page 2 and obscured by library name plate; "A Gift to the Keokuk Public Library from Estate of Caroline T. Davis" First page is a cardstock insert with an incredible color advertisement for Aetna Insurance Co. A phenomenal color illustration fills the first page with a large city building engulfed in flames while firefighters spray the flames with their hoses - stunning artwork. 2 page leaves on yellow paper follow before the title page. The yellow paper ad inserts in both the front and back are in rough condition, chipped, crumbling at edges, loose from binding, with tears. The yellow paper is a type of construction paper that tends to break with age. After ads, the inside pages of the directory appear to be clean, whole, intact, fully attached and holding together, with minimal age discoloration for the age. Ad inserts throughout, some on yellow paper that are not quite as beat up as the end papers. Front board and spine are detached, back board is hanging on by endpaper. Original covers with ads in silvery print badly faded but legible, worn on edges and corners. Spine has been replaced, tape repairs visible. Another 1860s early, rare directory. Ads are present, but condition of ad pages is poor, with the exception of the Aetna ad, and any inserts on special paper. Does not appear to be available digitally. Another Great from the Ron Lerch Collection.
